DTF Gang Sheet Size Guide: Widths, Lengths and Templates

Standard DTF gang sheet sizes, why 22 inches became the default width, how to pick the lengths you sell, and the file setup that keeps them print-ready.

Gang sheet sizing looks like a convention question and is actually an equipment question. Width is decided by your printer and film roll. Length should be decided by the order. Everything else is packaging.

Standard DTF gang sheet sizes

The sizes you see across the industry cluster tightly:

22 inches is the de facto standard width because it matches the most widely available DTF film rolls, which in turn matches the print width of the most common production printers. It is not a rule — it is an equipment coincidence that hardened into a convention.

Lengths in the 24–84 inch range cover most retail demand. Past about 84 inches, sheets become genuinely unpleasant to handle, press-side and cutting-side, which is worth remembering before you offer a 200-inch option because it looks good on a price grid.

Why you should not copy someone else’s size list

Your usable width is your printer’s printable width, minus its margins — not the film’s nominal width. A 24-inch printer with 1-inch unprintable margins gives you 22 inches of usable area, which is exactly why 22 became normal. If your machine gives you 21.5 inches, selling “22-inch sheets” means every sheet either clips or gets scaled.

Measure your actual printable width once, then build your product sizes from that number. If you set this up in software, the printer width should be a configuration value, not a hard-coded 22.

Fixed sizes or price by the inch?

Two models, and the right answer depends on who buys from you.

Fixed sizes (22×24, 22×36, 22×60) are simpler to merchandise, easier for customers to compare, and easier to batch in production. The cost is waste: a customer who needs 40 inches buys a 60-inch sheet, and either pays for 20 inches of nothing or feels overcharged.

Price by the inch lets the customer take exactly the length they need, with volume tiers so the per-inch rate drops as the sheet gets longer. Customers who understand DTF strongly prefer this, and it removes the “I’m paying for empty film” objection entirely. It requires software that can price a continuous variable at checkout.

In practice a lot of successful shops run both: fixed sizes for the drag-and-drop builder where customers fill a canvas, and per-inch pricing for uploaded sheets where the customer already knows their length.

Sizing designs on the sheet

Sheet size is half the question. The other half is the print sizes that go on it. Common apparel placements:

A 22-inch width fits two 10-inch adult fronts side by side with room for spacing, or five 4-inch left-chest logos in a row. That arithmetic is why 22 inches feels so comfortable in practice — it happens to divide neatly into the sizes apparel decorators actually need.

Gang sheet templates and file setup

If you or your customers build sheets manually, the template rules are consistent regardless of software:

  1. Canvas — exact sheet dimensions at 300 DPI. A 22×60 sheet is 6,600 × 18,000 pixels. That is a large file; expect it.
  2. Safe margin — keep artwork 0.25–0.5 inches inside the edges. Printers are not perfectly registered and edges are where clipping happens.
  3. Spacing — roughly 0.2 inches between designs. Enough to cut without a shaky hand ruining the neighbour, tight enough not to waste film.
  4. Transparency — export PNG with a genuine alpha channel. No white background, no flattened matte.
  5. No crop marks or registration marks unless your printer explicitly asks for them. They print.
  6. Colour — design in RGB if you like, but proof expecting CMYK plus white underbase. Neons and pure saturated blues will shift.

Oversized sheets and page splitting

If you sell long sheets but your RIP or printer works in pages, something has to split a 120-inch layout into printable segments. Doing that by hand is error-prone — a split through the middle of a design is a reprint.

How many designs fit? Work it out first

Before committing to a size list, run your actual designs against your actual width. Bear in mind that a grid estimate is conservative. Real auto-nesting rotates parts and interlocks irregular shapes, so a good nester typically fits more than a naive grid suggests — that gap is exactly the margin that loose manual layout gives away.

Recommendation

If you are setting up from scratch:

  • Set width from your measured printable width, not from convention.
  • Offer three fixed lengths (short, mid, long) for the visual builder — 24, 36, and 60 inches maps well to real demand.
  • Offer per-inch pricing with volume tiers for customers uploading finished sheets.
  • Cap the maximum length at something your team can actually handle and cut, not at what looks impressive.
  • Let software handle nesting and page splitting. Those two things are where sizing decisions turn into money.
