How to choose a DTF gang sheet builder.
Every app in this category demos well. The differences that actually cost you money show up in month four — at the variant ceiling, on a failed reorder, in wasted film. Here are the seven questions to ask before you commit, and where we stand on each.
A note on fairness. We make one of the apps on this page, so treat our answers as a vendor’s answers. What we have deliberately not done is publish a table of rivals’ prices and feature ticks — those change weekly and second-hand claims about competitors are how comparison pages become misleading. Instead every criterion below is phrased as a question you can put to any vendor, including us, and verify yourself in a trial.
Seven questions that separate gang sheet apps.
Does it create a product variant for every sheet?
This is the single most consequential architectural question and almost nobody asks it during a trial. Many gang sheet apps mint a new Shopify product variant for each custom sheet. Shopify enforces a hard ceiling of 2,048 variants per product — once a store reaches it, customers stop being able to check out. Apps work around this with cleanup jobs that delete old variants, which is exactly why a customer’s reorder from three months ago can silently fail.
customDTF: customDTF never creates a variant. All three flows sell through one permanent product, and the exact price is applied at checkout by Shopify Functions — Shopify’s own native checkout pricing. Nothing is minted, so nothing needs deleting, no cap exists to hit, and a reorder still resolves correctly months later.
How does the price reach the cart?
There are three common mechanisms: a throwaway variant priced on the fly, a draft order the customer is redirected into, or checkout-time pricing. Draft-order flows break the native Shopify checkout experience, lose discount-code and Shop Pay behaviour, and clutter your admin with abandoned drafts.
customDTF: Shopify Functions attach the calculated price at checkout on a permanent product. Your customers stay in the standard Shopify checkout, discounts behave normally, and no draft orders are generated.
What exactly do you receive when an order lands?
A builder that produces a layout preview but not a production file just moves the work to you. Ask for the resolution, the format, whether the order number is stamped on the file, and what happens to a sheet taller than your page height.
customDTF: A 300 DPI print-ready PNG, stamped with the order number and a QR code, as a download link on the Shopify order itself. Oversized layouts split automatically into indexed print-ready pages.
Is the nesting actually automatic — and does it rotate?
Auto-arrange quality is the difference between 78% and 94% sheet coverage, and film is your second-biggest cost after labour. A nester that will not rotate parts, or that leaves fixed gutters regardless of shape, quietly burns margin on every order.
customDTF: One-click auto-arrange that packs tight, handles rotation and spacing automatically, and is designed to maximise coverage rather than just avoid overlaps.
How good is the image pipeline on bad customer files?
Your customers will upload 600px JPEGs with white boxes behind the logo. Whether that becomes a usable transfer or a support ticket is decided entirely by the app’s processing stack — background removal on fine edges and hair, halftone conversion tuned for DTF film, and upscaling that sharpens without artefacts.
customDTF: Background removal at full resolution, DTF-tuned halftone conversion, AI upscaling for low-res source art, and automatic trimming — all one-click, before checkout.
What is the pricing model, and is there a ceiling?
A fixed monthly subscription costs the same in your worst month as your best. An uncapped percentage makes your best months your most expensive. A flat per-sheet fee is predictable but never stops scaling. Model matters more than headline rate.
customDTF: Free to install with no monthly fee, first 10 sheets commission-free, then 4% of gang-sheet sales per order — hard-capped at $500 per 30-day cycle. Full detail on the pricing page.
Can a customer reorder a past sheet in one click?
Repeat orders are the entire economics of a DTF shop. Shopify’s native Buy-it-again drops the gang sheet’s configuration, so unless the app implements reorder deliberately, your customer has to rebuild the sheet from scratch — and often just goes elsewhere.
customDTF: One click from the customer account rebuilds the exact same sheet at the correct price. Because no temporary variant was ever created, there is nothing that can have expired.
